Just in case you are wondering what it was really like on the Mountain today; Pea soup would sum in up. About 11:30 the clouds came down and socked us in. The good news is that it’s been snowing like stink for about 4 hours now. The snow is great, cross your fingers that the clouds either go up or down so we can see our feet tomorrow;]
Cheers, Sandra
Our snow measurement devise melts the snow and calculates the snowfall based on volume of water. We have been fiddling with the correct moisture content conversion calcualiton but the moisture content varies. Our physical observation of the month of January indicates that the snow moisture content averaged 15.75:1. We have adjusted the site to a 15:1 coversion, ie 15 cm of snow is equal to 1 cm of melted water. We will see how this fits through the month of February.
The winds were high today with lots of blowing snow on top. Please remember that my weather station is in a relatively sheltered spot. Depending on wind direction, high winds at the top of the lifts may not register. My weather station and webcam are half way down Cinderela on the right.
It was a good day to stay in the trees, I toured up last Chance Trail and it was great. Last Chance Trail is the pick up trail at the bottom of the Prairie T ski runs, and everyone that skis in that area should be aware that it’s Last Chance trail for a reason, beyond it you will find yourself in a box canyon, it’s almost the only place on the Mountain that you can’t ski out of, and its where most lost skiiers are found.
Cheers, Sandra
Thank goodness is snowed on the Mountain, lots too!! This warm weather in town makes me want to live up there.
Just in case you were wondering, it was great skiing this weekend. It warmed up to minus 6 and no wind.
